In 1975 Deann and George Verdier founded Sugarloaf Mountain Works, the company behind the Sugarloaf Festival. They wanted to create a marketplace where craftspeople and artisans could sell their works directly to the public. The first festival in 1976 in Gaithersburg had over 10,000 attendees and 200 artisans, and they’ve kept growing since. Every year people purchase about $20,000,000 worth of original arts and crafts directly from the artists. The festival has served as a launching platform for thousands of artists and their careers!
Part of the success of the Sugarloaf Fesitval is their selection process. They carefully handpick the artists out of hundreds of applicants. Although some top-quality folk art makes its way in, most of the works displayed are the top of the best hand-crafted items.
At the Sugarloaf Festival you will find everything from a gorgeous handmade checkered wood bowl and intricate jewelry, to masterful paintings and fantastic glass or ceramic pieces. Also, there are several demonstrations and it is an excellent opportunity to meet local artists.
