Route 1 in Alexandria: Widening to begin in late March

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has scheduled a “Pardon Our Dust” meeting for this Thursday, March 20th at Hayfield Secondary School (7:00 PM to 9:00 PM). Its purpose is to give community members an update on the widening of Route 1 near Fort Belvoir. A 3.5 mile stretch, the widened portion begins at Old Colchester Road on the south, goes by the main post of Fort Belvoir, and ends at George Washington/Mount Vernon Memorial Highway on the north. Funding has partially been made available as a result of the opening of the new hospital at Fort Belvoir under the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure. Additional growth at Fort Belvoir, along with development in Lorton and South County has led to increased traffic on an already traffic-laden road. Initial construction is scheduled to begin at the end of March/beginning of April.
