May 2012 Update on Springfield Mall

We’ve recently learned that the tenants in Springfield Mall have been given notice to vacate their spaces in order to pave the way for construction scheduled to begin this summer. The anchor stores (Target, Macy’s and JC Penney) will remain open. This first phase of construction will last about 2 years and will include the complete renovation of the interior. There will be a redesigned food court, movie theater and entrance to the mall. After this work is completed, construction will commence on the “town center” part of the mall, which will feature office space, a hotel, apartments and additional shopping and dining opportunities. Plans also include the construction of a central plaza, ground-floor retail in the apartment buildings, a grocery store, a cafe with outdoor seating, a fitness center and basketball/tennis courts. This will be a more pedestrian friendly atmosphere and we are really excited to see the progress!  Springfield has been waiting a long time for this.
