Date night in Lorton…fun restaurant review

On Tuesday, my husband and I decided to get away from the kids and have a nice, quiet meal at Pane e Vino, a wonderful Italian restaurant in Lorton Station.   I saw the photo on our new HelloVirginia.com website, and wanted to try it out.   There was no wait for a table, and the service was excellent.   We wanted some wine, and were surprised when the waiter brought the wine expert, Benidetto, over to our table to help us pick an excellent Italian red.   Tuesdays and Wednesdays are half price wine bottle nights – so we tried a somewhat expensive one and were truly delighted with it.   The food was just as good – very fresh ingredients with lots of flavor, and not too heavy like the food in some Italian restaurants can be.  After an appetizer of bruschetta and calamari fritti, he had lasagna, and I went for the Fettuccini Malafemmina (seafood marinara).   You never know what to expect with seafood around here, but this was good and fresh – mussels, clams, shrimp and crabmeat in a white wine and garlic sauce. Of course we were too full for desert.

Afterwards, we walked around the outdoor mall area at Lorton Station.  What a nice, quiet little shopping area!   It always surprises people who’ve lived in the area a long time when they come down to Lorton – it has changed so much.  This particular shopping area is built right by the VRE train station and surrounded by newer single family homes and townhouses – most in easy walking distance.   I’m looking forward to coming back soon and bringing some friends along.  And we’ll ask for Beni again to recommend another good wine – turns out he shares our interest in motorcycles – he used to race them back in Italy.
