Alexandria VA: Update to Telegraph Rd Improvement Project

Fairfax County will pay for the widening of and improvements to Telegraph Road between South Van Dorn Street and South Kings Highway with revenue from the Commercial and Industrial Tax, which is a special tax used only for transportation projects. This project was part of a larger design that would have widened Telegraph Road to 4 lanes from Leaf Road to South Kings Highway; unfortunately VDOT eliminated the funding for the entire project. The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors then allocated $10 million to this portion of the project. Fairfax County will pay for all of the costs, while VDOT will design and build it. The Board of Supervisors approved the preliminary design on November 19th, with VDOT hoping to start construction in early 2013. Help is on the way for everyone who passes through this Kingstowne area of Alexandria.

Here are some highlights of the plan:

–One turn lane from northbound Telegraph to South Kings Highway

–Two right turn lanes from southbound Telegraph to South Van Dorn

–Two left turn lanes from South Kings Highway to southbound Telegraph

–Two bike lanes

–Five foot wide sidewalk on east side

–Ten foot wide pedestrian/mixed use path on west side

–Provision for future dual left turn lanes from northbound Telegraph onto South Van Dorn

–Reconstruction of Huntley Meadows Park entrance

As a result of a public hearing in September, VDOT will consider allowing space for 2 U-turns at these two major intersections.
