Shannon Station

Shannon Station is lovely 386-unit townhome community located off of Old Keene Mill Road in Springfield. Constructed in the early 1980s, these homes have total square footage ranging from 1,840 to 2,300. Several floor plans are available, including the Corbett, Abbot, Bartlett, Andover, Covington and Dalton models. There are a variety of community amenities for all residents to enjoy. Highlights include an outdoor swimming pool, a clubhouse, basketball courts, playgrounds, tennis courts and walking trails scattered throughout the neighborhood. The homeowner’s association maintains a website with features such as a community event calendar, contact information for the Board of Directors, articles of interest and a history of the area.

Living in Shannon Station

According to the website, past events have included pool parties, yard sales and neighborhood clean-ups. All townhome units have dedicated parking spaces. Students attend Keene Mill Elementary, Irving Middle and West Springfield High Schools.

Many people choose to live in Shannon Station because of its proximity to a myriad of transportation choices. All of the area’s major arteries such as the Fairfax County Parkway, the Beltway and Interstates 95/395 are just a few minutes away. The Springfield Transportation Center offers access to Metro, VRE, Amtrak and Greyhound services for those who would rather not drive into work. There are also Fairfax Connector and Metro bus routes available for travel throughout the area. Slugging, or instant carpooling, takes place at several designated spots including Cardinal Plaza, Daventry subdivision and the intersection of Sydenstricker and Hooes. This community is a terrific location for anyone stationed at Fort Belvoir, the Pentagon or the new National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency campus due to open at the Engineer Proving Ground in Springfield.

Residents have access to many entertainment and shopping resources in the area. George Mason University’s Patriot Center and Center for the Arts are great places to catch a concert, play, dance recital or another type of performing arts event. Lake Accotink Park has something for everyone including canoe, pedal boat and row boat rentals, fishing, miniature golf, snack bar, antique carousel, athletic fields and walking trails. South Run RECenter was recently renovated with a 2-story fitness center. It has a state of the art entertainment center with individual screens and video simulators on many pieces of cardio equipment, new strength training equipment, a Pilates studio, a roomy stretching area and a wide range of classes available. The Old Keene Mill Shopping Center features Whole Foods Market, Austin Grill, Walgreen’s, Washington Sports Club, Victor’s Pizza and Starbucks. There is a Giant grocery store and a 24 hour CVS and an attached MinuteClinic in the Cardinal Plaza Shopping Center. Other great Springfield merchants include Embassy Car Wash, Einstein Bagels, Trader Joe’s, Mike’s American Restaurant, Ace Fischer’s Hardware and Borders.
