Mt Vernon

Mount Vernon is a large community located 12 miles south of Washington, D.C. with about 30,000 residents. From the modest homes to multi-million dollar mansions and everything in between, there are a wide variety of housing options to choose from. Mount Vernon is generally considered to be the area south of Belle View Boulevard on the GW Parkway and the area from the Potomac River and down Richmond Highway south to Fort Belvoir. Some of the popular neighborhoods within Mount Vernon include Belle Haven, Fort Hunt, Hollin Hall, Riverside Estates, Waynewood, Williamsburg Manor and Ferry Landing Estates. Many of the upscale homes have spectacular water view of the Potomac River. There are plenty of overlook areas, parks and picnic areas located along the George Washington Memorial Parkway that offer great views as well.

Living in Mt Vernon

The 18.5-mile Mount Vernon Trail is the perfect place to ride bikes or go for a jog; it begins at the historic Mount Vernon Estate and continues out to Theodore Roosevelt Island. George Washington’s estate includes not only the distinctive mansion, but also features outbuildings, a working blacksmith shop, farm and garden areas plus a brand new museum with over 7,000 artifacts. The historic Gunston Hall and Woodlawn Plantation are located nearby as well. Belle Haven and Mount Vernon Country Clubs are private facilities with memberships available for purchase. Each includes an 18-hole golf course, a swimming pool and elegant clubhouses with dining facilities. Mount Vernon RECenter, a Fairfax County facility, is a great resource for area residents. There is a 25-meter heated indoor pool, fitness center with cardio and weight training equipment, dance/multipurpose rooms and a year round 200 foot by 85 foot indoor ice arena. The Mount Vernon Farmers Market takes place at Sherwood Regional Library from May to November and boasts a wide array of produce, specialty meat products, baked goods and seasonal plants and cut flowers.

This section of Fairfax County is very convenient to Old Town Alexandria, Washington D.C. and Fort Belvoir. All of the scrumptious eateries, one-of-a-kind shops, historical attractions and art galleries that line Old Town’s streets are just minutes away. Ronald Reagan National Airport is also close by when you are ready to take a trip. Mount Vernon residents find it easy to access the Beltway and Interstates 395/95 for painless travel throughout the area. If you work at one of the many federal buildings downtown, or just want to check out the Smithsonian Institute or national memorials, D.C. is very close. Many military and civilian personnel working at Fort Belvoir find Mount Vernon a terrific place to reside because of the short commute time. The Huntington Metro station is the closet to Mount Vernon; yellow line trains are available there, with easy transfer to the blue line at King Street.
