Fireplace Tips: Warm Your Hearth This Holiday Season!

Keep warm and stay safe this winter with these tips for safe use and getting the most out of your fireplace!

Clean Your Chimney

Residue and debris from previously burned materials can build up in your fireplace over time, so this is one of the most important things to take into account to begin with as these materials can catch fire and combust, causing a chimney fire which you absolutely do not want. Yes, fire departments do exist for a reason, but if we can avoid them with a little pre-planning, inspection and cleaning then it makes everyones day a little easier.

Install Glass Doors Or A Metal Screen

Fire is never consistent, so having an open fireplace with nothing to contain the fire is a risk that we just shouldn’t take. Sparks can fly, if you have a wood-burning fireplace pieces of burnt wood or ash can shoot out into your living space, and etc. Not only can this cause a possible fire, but you don’t want to damage your floors. Luckily, there’s an easy solution for this and you have a couple of different options; installing a glass fireplace door or a metal screen in front of the fireplace should take care of any sparks. Simple enough.

Use The Correct Type Of Wood

If you have a gas fireplace this might be a moot point, but if you’re working with a wood-burning one, you want to make sure you only buy wood specific for the season. This ensures that the wood will burn clean and evenly as seasoned firewood is dried out for atleast 6 months to fully reduce the water. If your main goal is to warm your home, choose a thicker wood such as oak, if you are more concerned with the visual aspect of the fire, choose elm or maple as these create a nice and attractive flame.

Move The Air With Ceiling Fans

While everyone may not be able to do this, if you do have a ceiling fan it could come in handy with keeping your home warm. At first thought that seems a bit strange because when you think of ceiling fans you usually think of them for cooling purposes. Well, it really depends on the direction that the fan is moving. If you run your ceiling fans in a clockwise direction at the lowest speeds, it will help push the warm air throughout your home.
