Prolonged and steady economic growth from the 1950s through to the present day has developed Fairfax County from a rural area to a technological and business center for the East Coast. As job opportunities expand, so does the need for housing, and new developments around Alexandria have served this. Kingstowne is a relatively new development, and the range and affordability of housing options on offer has made it the most sought after real estate in the area. Condominiums and townhouses are more prevalent than single family homes, although they are also available, as are apartments. On average, townhouses range from $190,000 to $400,000. Condominiums start in the low $100,000's and rise to around $250,000. Detached houses typically start in the high $100,000's and climb to the mid-$400,000s. Springfield is another family-oriented residential community with comprehensive housing options. Townhouses and condominiums start at below $100,000 and range up to $300,000 plus. Single-family homes start in the mid $100,000s and run up to $700,000 and more for Victorian estate homes and properties with large lots. Fairfax County runs several affordable housing programs for would-be renters and home buyers. The Fairfax County First-Time Homebuyers Program offers moderate income families homes at prices well below the average. These townhomes and condominiums are located throughout Fairfax County, (including Springfield and Kingstowne) in communities that offer swimming pools, tennis courts, jogging trails and tot lots.
