Welcome to Stoneybrooke, a subdivision of 250 single family homes built between 1969 and 1970 in Alexandria. Residents are encouraged but not required to join the Stoneybrooke Citizens Association. The $20 fee funds the community directory, monthly newsletters, social activities and the association’s new website. According to their website, the association is a great resource for local information about traffic and school initiatives; strong membership boosts their relationships with local politicians and other neighborhood associations. The Stoneybrooke Sentinel is a terrific avenue for residents—it includes articles from Supervisor Jeff McKay, neighborhood watch information, a roster of neighborhood babysitters, announcements, classified section and an event calendar. There is an e-mail list for interested residents; currently 100 families have signed up for this secure and convenient way to view messages and information about the development. The Plant Exchange is a community group where members can trade plants, seeds and bulbs, or make requests for items they are seeking. While Stoneybrooke does not have a community pool, residents are able to join the Virginia Hills pool, which has a swim team, the Tidal Wave. Virginia Hills is a subdivision off of Telegraph Road. Stoneybrooke Park and the historic Stone Mansion are the centerpieces of this neighborhood. A Fairfax County facility, the 14-acre park includes basketball courts, a sheltered picnic area, a playground and tennis courts. Members of the public can rent out Stone Mansion, which is on the grounds of Stoneybrooke Park. It boasts several separate rooms, a screened porch, a catering kitchen and an elegant foyer. Some tables and folding chairs included with the rental. Plenty of parking is available in the adjacent lot.
Stoneybrooke is a super location near everything the Alexandria area has to offer. Several Metro stations on the yellow and blue lines are convenient, as are local bus routes, Amtrak and VRE train services. Residents have painless access to all major transportation routes including Interstates 495/395/95, the GW Parkway, Route 1 and the Fairfax County Parkway. Students attend Groveton Elementary, Carl Sandburg Middle and West Potomac High Schools. Old Town Alexandria and Del Ray are just a few minutes away. There are award winning restaurants, many historical attractions, unique shops and art galleries throughout Old Town. Whether it is walking along the Potomac River or checking out the artists at the Torpedo Factory, there is something there for everyone. Del Ray features a multitude of interesting restaurants, health & wellness centers (including massage therapy and Pilates/yoga studios), specialty shops and the Birchmere, where you can catch many fun musical acts. Kingstowne is also nearby and it boasts a Top Golf (miniature golf and driving range) and a vibrant Town Center. The Town Center has a 16-screen movie theater, 2 grocery stores, a dry cleaners and Starbucks along with a variety of shops and restaurants. Choices include Panera Bread, Firehouse Subs, Bonefish Grill, Kaleidoscoops, World Market and Bath & Body Works. For those who like to interact with nature or simply relax, Huntley Meadows Park is a place to do just that. Its 1,425 acres are filled with wetlands, wildlife preserves, a boardwalk trail and observation platforms. Sightings of beavers, frogs, and many species of birds are common. Area employers include the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, Calibre, SAIC, INOVA Heathplex and numerous military bases. The Pentagon, Fort Belvoir, a U.S. Army Reserve Center, Fort Myer, Bolling Air Force and U.S. Coast Guard stations are very close by.
